THE JUST-IN-CASE CARD

Before the appearance of The Green Book and other race-focused travel guides, Black people relied on community resources, word of mouth, and social connections when planning and taking trips. Hezekiah Jackson remembered how his and other families’ Green Books were shared community resources:

People would borrow [The Green Books] in the neighborhoods because a lot of them didn’t have [the books]. They would come down [to the house] and say, “Is your Mama here?” And I said, “No, Mother’s not. She’s gone to the church,” or whatever. Then they would say, “When she gets back here, tell her we need one of those Green Books, ’cause somebody just died” in Detroit or New York, or whatever.
