THE JUST-IN-CASE CARD
Before the appearance of The Green Book and other race-focused travel guides, Black people relied on community resources, word of mouth, and social connections when planning and taking trips. Hezekiah Jackson remembered how his and other familiesâ Green Books were shared community resources:
People would borrow [The Green Books] in the neighborhoods because a lot of them didnât have [the books]. They would come down [to the house] and say, âIs your Mama here?â And I said, âNo, Motherâs not. Sheâs gone to the church,â or whatever. Then they would say, âWhen she gets back here, tell her we need one of those Green Books, âcause somebody just diedâ in Detroit or New York, or whatever.
